BUDGET IS ANOTHER NAIL IN PLYMOUTH’S COFFIN

"This afternoon's news that the UK's defence budget will be cut by £2.3 billion next year is a further body blow to Plymouth remaining the home of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines” Plymouth Sutton & Devonport’s Parliamentary spokesman, Oliver Colvile claimed.

“This news just compounds last week’s rumours that frigates are to be moved from Plymouth to Portsmouth.  I am amazed that the Government has cut our country’s defence budget just when they are being expected to take on further commitments in Afghanistan”.

“I think it is time that our two Labour MPs should explain whether they will be supporting the Finance Bill – which turns the measures contained in the Budget into law.  They need to tell us how they think this is going to help Plymouth remain a major service garrison” Oliver added.

“This, combined with the announcement that there is going to be a further 2p increase in alcohol from mid night tonight, despite our Labour MPs lobbying the Government not to do this, just goes to show how ineffectual they have become” Oliver continued.

“Plymouth needs some straight answers to some straight questions. I therefore propose to send Freedom of Information Act request to the Secretary of State for Defence asking what cuts he will be making to our Defence budget and how this will affect Plymouth” Oliver said.
